Henry Chinaski is an alcoholic writer and poet who spends his life in the bars of Los Angeles. He takes part in street fights, bets are placed on him, but he prefers to earn booze and a hamburger in "unconventional" ways. One day, at the other end of the bar, he sees the fading beauty Wanda and immediately falls in love with her. Wanda is also an alcoholic, but, unlike the unemployed Henry, she is supported by a certain businessman. Henry and Wanda's "romance" grows, but the editor-in-chief of the literary magazine, Tully Sorenson, soon shows up and is ready to publish Chinaski's stories. When Henry and Tully meet personally, it turns out that the latter is a beautiful, rich young girl who is in love with his work, as well as with himself.
