Nell’anno 140 d.C., venti anni dopo la misteriosa scomparsa della Nona Legione tra le montagne scozzesi, il giovane centurione romano Marcus Aquila (Channing Tatum) arriva in Britannia per presidiare una guarnigione. Il padre di Marcus era colui che era a capo della legione che scomparì anni prima: il giovane soldato spera quindi di riabilitare l’onore della propria famiglia servendo la patria.
Dopo aver sventato un attacco dentro la guarnigione romana da parte di una tribù di Celti, Marcus viene premiato per il proprio coraggio, ma viene anche congedato dal servizio militare a causa di una grave ferita riportata alla gamba durante l’assalto.
Nonostante la propria carriera sia stata stroncata sul nascere, Marcus è più che mai deciso a riabilitare l’onore e la memoria del padre. Si dirige quindi insieme allo schiavo Esca (Jamie Bell) verso il nord della Britannia, dove sembra sia stato avvistato presso qualche tribù locale lo stendardo della Nona Legione.
