Sogna avventure ad occhi aperti, ha una cotta per la sua collega Cheryl Melhoff (Kristen Wiig) e lavora con un fotoreporter di nome Sean O'Connell (Sean Penn), un uomo misterioso le cui foto sono molto apprezzate. O'Connell ha inviato a Mitty i suoi ultimi negativi e ritiene che il numero 25 in particolare, catturi la "quint'essenza della vita" e che dovrebbe essere usato per la copertina dell'edizione finale della rivista prima che si converta all'online. Tuttavia, quel negativo manca all'appello e capendo che il suo licenziamento è vicino, a causa del ridimensionamento del personale dovuto al passaggio al digitale, Mitty cerca di contattare O'Connell, che pero' risulta irrintracciabile. Cheryl suggerisce a Mitty di ragionare sui vecchi negativi e di utilizzarli come indizi per scoprire posizione di Sean.

Ne osservano tre e una di queste foto ritrae una nave. Tutto porta Mitty a pensare che O'Connell sia in Groenlandia, dove si dirige per riuscire a trovarlo. Giunto a destinazione, un barista di Nuuk spiega che O'Connell è partito su una nave e che per trovarlo, Mitty deve salire sull'elicottero postale, anche se il pilota è completamente ubriaco. Dopo uno dei suoi soliti viaggi mentali, Mitty acquisisce sicurezza e si imbarca sul velivolo. Ma presto scopre che l'elicottero non può atterrare sulla nave, ed è costretto calarsi con una serie di pericolose acrobazie. Tuttavia, O'Connell ha già lasciato l'imbarcazione. L'equipaggio gli offre la torta di clementine che O'Connell ha lasciato a bordo, sul cui imballaggio è segnata la nuova destinazione del fotografo. L'itinerario porta Mitty in Islanda, dove O'Connell fotografa il vulcano Eyjafjallajökull in eruzione. Le avventure di Mitty alla ricerca del suo collega continueranno senza sosta, catapultandolo in una serie di esperienze incredibili che finiranno per cambiagli la vita...
