Actor Ryuichi Sakamoto
Plot Summary A celebration of an artist’s life in the purest sense, Ryuichi Sakamoto | Opus is the swan song of one of the world’s greatest musicians. As a parting gift, just months before his death in 2023, Sakamoto mustered all of his energy to leave us with one final performance: a concert film featuring just him and a piano, directed by his son, Neo Sora.
Note from Encoder This is our Criterion BluRay x265 encode of *Ryuichi Sakamoto | Opus (2023)*, an intimate concert film directed by Neo Sora. The film captures legendary composer and musician Ryuichi Sakamoto in what became his final recorded performance, playing twenty compositions alone at the piano.
Audio: Japanese DD+ 7.1 with Dolby Atmos.
Trivia: The performance was recorded in late 2022 at the NHK Broadcasting Center in Tokyo, approximately six months before Sakamoto's death in March 2023. Because his health had made conventional live performances increasingly difficult, the project was conceived as a way for him to preserve a final performance while he was still able to play. Sakamoto selected the twenty pieces and determined their order himself. The film premiered out of competition at the 2023 Venice Film Festival and was subsequently released as a Criterion Collection title.
