Note from Encoder WXIII: Patlabor the Movie 3 (2001) — original title WXIII 機動警察パトレイバー (WXIII Kidō Keisatsu Patoreibā). This one is very much the oddball of the Patlabor film trilogy. Rather than following Oshii’s political and philosophical through-line, WXIII pivots hard into a noir-tinged kaiju thriller, blending police procedural vibes with a surprisingly somber, almost melancholic tone. Think less mecha politics, more urban legend creeping through Tokyo Bay.
Audio options we have Japanese and English.
A lesser-known bit of trivia: unlike the first two films, WXIII was directed by Fumihiko Takayama rather than Mamoru Oshii, which explains the noticeable tonal shift. Oshii still contributed at the story level, but the final film feels intentionally separate—almost like a side-story experiment within the Patlabor universe rather than a direct continuation. That creative detour is exactly why it remains so divisive… and quietly fascinating lol.
