In a different, more festive vein, Matarazzo focuses exclusively on the world of workers as a miscrocosm of society. Treno popolare (People's Train, 1933) celebrates workers at play, not at work. The film is structured around a one-day outing for workers on one of the trains designed for such occasions. The carnival atmosphere blatantly evokes the cultura dopolavoristica. Victoria de Grazia describes how "by organizing a vast program of outings and tourism, the OND (Opera Nazionale Dopolavoro) sought in the most tangible way possible to promote a new national identity." The popular trains that took workers to the different parts of Italy were designed to impress them with the benevolence of the regime. The trip entailed traveling to another locale, in country or city, free lunch, singing and dancing, and public political rallies. Organized by the state on a mass scale, these trips, as de Grazia indicates, were "strictly plebeian affairs" and were generally avoided by the "individualistic upper classes."


The presentation of the day's outing offers itself as an idealized microcosm of Italian working-class life with its emphasis on generational, sexual, and behavioral differences. The people are presented as slightly ridiculous but basically good. The festive air, the emphasis on historical sites, the bucolic landscape, seem designed to give an impression of a world where the only serious conflicts are romantic. The singing and dancing are designed to enhance the image of harmony and pleasurable activity. The train itself provides the appropriate image of a technology that facilitates pleasure. The visual style of the film emphasizes the touristic dimension providing a montage of place and activities, and playful visual jokes such as a yawn that becomes the black hole of the tunnel.


The loose structure of the film is a counterpart to the riotousness of the carnival atmosphere. However, the film does present problems and complications. Though the characters are freed from the rigors of work, they are not freed from domestic burdens: poor marital relations, the demands of children, and disappointments in love. The return trip thus reveals itself a prelude to work and to repetition. The mixture of documentary and fiction also serve to enhance the sense of the "real" burdens and demands and the transitoriness of the pleasures. (Marcia Landy)
