Los Angeles, 1928. Christine, che vive in un sobborgo, lascia come tutte la mattine suo figlio Walter a casa da solo per recarsi al lavoro. Il bambino viene rapito ma l'accorata preghiera della madre perché i rapitori glielo restituiscano viene ascoltata e, dopo alcuni mesi, il piccolo torna a casa. Frastornata dalle emozioni e dalla folla di poliziotti e giornalisti, accoglie il bambino nella sua casa. Ma in cuor suo sa perfettamente che quello che è tornato non è suo figlio. La polizia, i media e l'opinione pubblica non le danno però retta. Inizia quindi un battaglia per far emergere la verità, con l'aiuto di un attivista - il reverendo Briegleb -, ma incontrando una grande resistenza del sistema.
