Maximus is a powerful Roman general, loved by the people and the aging Emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Before his death, the Emperor chooses Maximus to be his heir over his own son, Commodus, and a power struggle leaves Maximus and his family condemned to death. Усомнившемуся в его словах Кевину вскоре предоставляются неоспоримые доказательства. Осознав, что действительно оказался в альтернативной реальности, Кевин принимается искать способа вернуться в свой мир, к жене, которая оплакивает их исчезнувшего сынишку.

«Сдвиг» — недорогая, но отлично прописанная, поставленная и сыгранная фантастика, которая при ближайшем рассмотрении оказывается, скорее, мистической драмой с религиозным посылом. В фильме множество аллюзий на Библию и прямых цитат из Книги Иова.
