For Paolo Cavara, war is an abomination, which does not exist only during the war conflict, but is something that persists within modern society. For this reason, he resorts to the abstraction of the mise-en-scène: he identifies a deliberately unreal place in which the snowy whiteness of the surface is contrasted with a narrow, obscure and fragmented space from which, for the human being, it is impossible both to escape and to wriggle out of the metaphysical presence of Evil.
