In a devastated Earth overrun by invincible predators of a possible extraterrestrial origin, the Abbotts are struggling to survive in the desolate urban jungle of New York City: a death trap defined by a new era of utter silence. La société post-apocalyptique est plongée dans le silence le plus total. Le moindre bruit peut être mortel, faisant apparaître des monstres destructeurs. S'ils se rendent parfois en ville pour trouver des vivres et du matériel de survie, la famille Abbott reste généralement cloîtrée dans sa ferme. Pendant que papa cherche un moyen d'enrayer la menace, les enfants tentent de vivre une existence normale. Tout le monde est encore affecté par la mort brutale d'un des leurs. Maman est enceinte et elle doit bientôt accoucher. Contrôler les sons du nouveau-né risque de ne pas être facile.
