In the game, we take control of a group of adventurers who respond to the call of the ruler Trebor. The magnate offers mercenaries fortune and fame for recovering his precious amulet. It turns out that it was stolen by Trebor's former advisor - the wizard Werdna took him to a labyrinth full of dangers. The brave ones must stop the antagonist before he learns the secrets of the acquired artifact.

Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord is a dungeon-crawler in which most of the time we explore dungeons and face their inhabitants. We start the game by forming a team with ready-made heroes or a character creator at our disposal. The second option allows you to create heroes belonging to one of five races (human, dwarf, elf, halfling, gnome), assign points to their coefficients (strength, intellect, agility, luck, etc.) and choose a character (good, neutral, evil). Each of the six party members can belong to one of the standard classes, such as a warrior or a thief, as well as professions combining various skills (e.g. a bishop uses both magic and priestly spells).
