Brandon Shaw e Phillip Morgan, due giovani studenti, uccidono il loro amico David Kentley, strangolandolo con una corda, e ne nascondono il corpo in un baule antico sul quale imbandiscono la tavola per un party. Inizia una singolare festa, a cui sono chiamati a partecipare anche il padre del ragazzo ucciso e la sua ragazza Janet Walker, che in precedenza aveva avuto una relazione con Brandon....



La trama è ispirata a un reale fatto di cronaca nera: l'omicidio del 14enne Bobby Franks, assassinato da due studenti dell'Università di Chicago, Leopold e Loeb1.
