Note : I don't know what it is with New Zealand and goofy splatter flicks, but although this might not reach all the way up there with Peter Jackson's Braindead (and really, what does), it's a very worthy effort, both quite funny and extremely gory. Plus, a few innovations, I think this is the first time I've seen zombies killed with sex toys. Director Jason Lei Howden just finished a Kickstarter for a sequel, so definitely check that out some time soon too. This is a must-see for metalheads, gorehounds, and the considerable overlap between the two.

Metal-loving teenager Brodie moves in with his straitlaced Christian aunt and uncle after his father dies and his mother is institutionalized, and experiences immediate friction with the family, as well as bullying at school by his cousin and others, while hanging out with his loser friends Dion and Giles. However, he meets fellow metalhead Zakk, and they form the band Deathgasm, joined by Dion and Giles. Zakk takes Brodie along to an abandoned house to search for legendary metal musician Rikki Daggers, who hands them an album before being killed. The album contains sheet music to the Black Hymn, an ancient piece of music capable of summoning demons, which the band immediately tries to play, but they stop when weird things start happening. A love triangle arises between Brodie, Zakk, and Medina, a girl at their school, but they're soon forced to deal with bigger problems, as playing the Black Hymn at another practice session leads to the town's inhabitants vomiting blood and becoming possessed zombies, as well as the imminent arrival of the demon Aeloth, who will merge with the most evil person in the town the next night, and it's up to the gang to save the day.

This is a completely fine Blu-Ray of a not particularly visually demanding film (although the cinematography gets considerably better once things start getting weird). 5.1 track is also good, as would be expected, and the director's commentary track is pretty worthwhile.
