Big Trouble in Little China
Truck driver Jack Burton arrives in Chinatown, San Francisco, and goes to the airport with his Chinese friend Wang Chi to welcome his green-eyed fiancée Miao Yin who is arriving from China. However she is kidnapped on the arrival by a Chinese street gang and Jack and Wang chase the group. Soon they learn that the powerful evil sorcerer called David Lo Pan, who has been cursed more than two thousand years ago to exist without physical body, needs to marry a woman with green eyes to retrieve his physical body and Miao is the chosen one. Jack and Wang team-up with the lawyer Gracie Law, the bus driver and sorcerer apprentice Egg Shen and their friends and embark in a great adventure in the underground of Chinatown, where they face a world of magicians and magic, monsters and martial arts fighters.

Note : We're back with some more Carpenter at his most entertaining, and this pastiche of Indiana Jones-style adventure films, martial arts, and comedy is one of his absolute best, a stylish romp full of fun action, impeccable practical and optical effects, and great performances, where it's truck driver vs. ancient Chinese sorcerer. Kurt Russell is a charming idiot, Dennis Dun is heroic, James Hong seethes with evil, Victor Wong is goofily eccentric, and Kim Cattrall is cute as a button. It's very light fare, but excellently executed, and has the distinction of being the first major Hollywood film with an Asian kind-of lead actor.
Wang Chi's fiancée, recently arrived from China, gets kidnapped, and it's up to him and his best friend, meathead trucker Jack Burton, to get her back. But this is no ordinary kidnapping, as dark forces conspire in Chinatown to break an ancient curse, weather-themed kung fu warriors emerge, and it turns out the Chinese have a very large number of hells. Luckily, they're helped by local magician Egg Shen, and venture into a series of tunnels and caverns beneath the city to save the day.
This new Italian remaster is honestly very good looking, with nice filmic color, good skintones and slightly blue/teal shadows, excellent contrast and fine grain. However, apparently the aspect ratio was screwed up, but that was fixed in the hybrid remux I got this from by adjusting the display aspect ratio, so this is probably the best currently available presentation of this film. 5.1 track sounds good, original stereo as well, of the commentary tracks, I'd personally recommend the one with Carpenter and Russell, as well as the SFX artist one if you're interested.
