He was responsible for tracking German activities in Portugal.

There he discovered a German agent filing reports about Britain's

defences ' ... without ever leaving Lisbon - with the help of a

map, a Blue Guide to England, some military books, and a good

imagination ...',



This experience gave Greene the basis for this novel.
