Nell'anno 2154 esistono due classi di persone: quelle molto ricche vivono su una lussuosa stazione spaziale chiamata Elysium, e tutti gli altri, che vivono sul pianeta Terra ormai sovrappopolato e in rovina. Il segretario Rhodes (Jodie Foster), un alto ufficiale del governo, si prepara a rafforzare le leggi anti-immigrazione per preservare lo stile di vita dei cittadini di Elysium. Questo non riesce a fermare le popolazioni della Terra dal cercare di entrare in ogni modo possibile. Quando lo sfortunato Max (Matt Damon) viene messo all'angolo, accetta di intraprendere una rischiosissima missione che, se avrà successo salverà non solo la sua vita ma potrebbe riportare uguaglianza in questi due mondi in forte contrapposizione.....
