New York City is subsumed in arctic winds, dark nights, and white lights, its life unfolds, for it is an extraordinary hive of the imagination, the greatest house ever built, and nothing exists that can check its vitality. One night in winter, Peter Lake (Colin Farrell), orphan and master-mechanic, attempts to rob a fortress-like mansion on the Upper West Side. Though he thinks the house is empty, the daughter of the house is home. Thus begins the love between Peter, an Irish burglar in his early 20's, and Beverly Penn (Jessica Brown Findlay), a young girl, who is dying.

Description
Ambientato in una meravigliosa New York, nell'arco di oltre un secolo, Storia d'inverno, trasposizione cinematografica dell'omonimo romanzo di Mark Helprin, è un racconto che parla di miracoli, destini incrociati e dell'antica battaglia tra il bene e il male. Tutto ha inizio quanto Peter Lake (Colin Farrell), abilissimo ladro, durante un tentativo di rapina in una villa, si imbatte nella bellissima Beverly Penn (Jessica Brown Findlay), figlia del ricco proprietario dell'abitazione. Per entrambi è un colpo di fulmine, ma Beverly è afflitta da una malattia incurabile, una forma mortale di tubercolosi, e come se ciò non bastasse, a contrastare il loro amore ci si mette anche un pericoloso gangster, il demoniaco Pearly Soames (Russell Crowe), un tempo suo mentore ma che ha ora un conto in sospeso con Peter ed è deciso a liberarsi di lui una volta per tutte. Mentre Peter cerca disperatamente di salvare il suo unico vero amore, combattendo contro il tempo e contro le forze del male, Pearly fa tutto ciò che è in suo potere per ucciderlo. Peter ha bisogno di un miracolo, ma solo il tempo dirà se ne accadrà uno.
Tra gli interpreti del film, che ha segna l'esordio alla regia dello sceneggiatore premio Oscar Akiva Goldsman, troviamo anche i premi Oscar Jennifer Connelly, William Hurt e Eva Marie Saint e dagli esordienti Ripley Sobo e Mckayla Twiggs.
