Since the release of Heartbeat City in March 1984, The Cars have

racked up platinum records thanks to their highly original identity for

that era. A sort of missing link between the Ramones and Elvis Costello, with

a slight touch of Roxy Music, Ric Ocasek's band hails pop in full

punk fury in their 1978 debut work. Like a kind of new wave Made

in the U.S.A., but in the respect of rock'n'roll from the old days.... The same year 1984

will also see the birth of a new television channel that will revolutionize pop and

rock by essentially becoming a hotbed of music videos. The Cars

will have the bright idea to jump on the video-winning bandwagon, and their fifth

album willα be well supported by MTV, which will continuously broadcast You Might

Think and Magic, two TV catchphrases that will reach the top of the

rock charts. Highly gifted for catchy melodies and choruses on a

repetition (see the slow ballad Drive), Ocasek once again signs a

beautiful, sappy soundtrack for the United States of that era.
