Ogni giorno nelle periferie delle metropoli americane si combatte una guerra che coinvolge cittadini, spacciatori di droga e tutori della legge. E' una guerra che fa le sue vittime e fra queste il sergente Alonzo Harris, che lavora da tredici anni per la narcotici di Los Angeles con metodi piuttosto discutibili, sempre in bilico fra legalità e corruzione: il suo ottimismo è stato intaccato dal contatto con la realtà delle strade, dove la lotta al crimine può costare la vita e fare il proprio lavoro può significare infrangere proprio quella legge che si dovrebbe imporre. Un film duro e drammatico in cui il sergente Alonzo mette alla prova il carattere del giovane collega, Jake Hoyt, che ha un giorno, un giorno solo, per dimostrare di cosa è capace. Nel corso di ventiquattrore, Jack si troverà sempre più coinvolto nella logica ambigua di Alonzo e i due uomini saranno costretti a mettere in gioco la loro carriera e le loro e le loro stesse vite per seguire due concezioni opposte di giustizia.
