GOD EATER has a decent image quality with a native resolution of 855p. There's some aliasing around the lines, not severe but easy to spot. Fixing this includes descaling and reconstruction together with anti-aliasing. The flat areas look great though. There are hardly any colour bands, so we applied only the basic de-banding. The main focus of this project is on encoding parameter tuning. Initially, our baseline settings led to output file sizes of around 2.5 GB/EP. This is because, first, GOD EATER outperforms many other anime TV shows in terms of image quality for its detailed drawing and rich textures. Second, there are lots of dark scenes and fights. Third, the post-production added small, random screen-shaking effects throughout. Lastly, the dynamic noise is very high. We modified the encoding parameters based on these features. During pre-processing, we removed some noise and then adjusted the parameters which in turn re-allocated the bitrate. Dark, and high dynamic scenes were given slightly fewer bitrates so that the bitrates saved were given to the lines and the textures which humans are more sensitive to. The outcome is that we've reduced the file sizes down to a more acceptable 1.7 GB/EP average, while maintaining a comparable level of perceived visual quality.
