CLARICE LISPECTOR (1920–1977) was an internationally acclaimed Ukrainian-born Brazilian novelist and short-story writer, one of Brazil’s most important literary figures and considered to be among the greatest women writers of the 20th century.
Lispector achieved international fame with innovative, idiosyncratic works that depict a highly personal, almost existentialist view of the human dilemma, and explore a variety of narrative styles with themes of intimacy and introspection. Notoriously difficult to translate, they are written in a prose style characterized by a simple vocabulary and elliptical sentence structure. In contrast to the regional or national social concerns expressed by many of her Brazilian contemporaries, Lispector's artistic vision transcends time and place; her characters, in elemental situations of crisis, are frequently female and only incidentally modern or Brazilian.
While in law school in Rio, Lispector began publishing her first journalistic work and short stories, catapulting to fame at the age of 23 with the publication of her first novel, NEAR TO THE WILD HEART (1944), written as an interior monologue in a style and language that was considered revolutionary in Brazil, and winning critical acclaim for its sensitive interpretation of adolescence. In her later works, such as THE APPLE IN THE DARK (1961), THE PASSION ACCORDING TO G.H. (1964), ÁGUA VIVA / THE STREAM OF LIFE (1973), THE HOUR OF THE STAR (1977), and A BREATH OF LIFE (1978), her characters, alienated and searching for meaning in life, gradually gain a sense of awareness of themselves and accept their place in an arbitrary, yet eternal, universe.
It is said Lispector’s finest prose is found in her short stories. Collections such as FAMILY TIES (1960) and THE FOREIGN LEGION (1964) focus on personal moments of revelation in the everyday lives of the protagonists and the lack of meaningful communication among individuals in a contemporary urban setting. Her newly reissued COMPLETE STORIES (2018) covers her entire amazing career, from her teenage years to her deathbed. Its editor, Benjamin Moser, describes Lispector as the most important Jewish writer in the world since Kafka.
