Quando il volo 828 della Montego Air dalla Giamaica a New York City atterra dopo un viaggio turbolento, ma di routine, i 191 passeggeri dell'aereo e il suo equipaggio apprendono che, mentre sono passate solo poche ore per loro, il resto del mondo li ha considerati dispersi - e presunti morti - per oltre cinque anni e mezzo. Una volta tornati, i passeggeri - inizialmente diffidenti di se stessi - sono tormentati da delle cosiddette "chiamate", che per convinzione di coloro che le hanno, operano a fin di bene attraverso di loro. Si manifestano attraverso la voce di chi le subisce, come un pensiero, ma sotto forma di ordine.

I passeggeri dunque non fanno altro che ubbidire, e spesso alcuni (tormentati brutalmente da esse) prendono decisioni drastiche, come il suicidio. Ubbidendo alle chiamate, si scoprono sempre nuovi segreti, avvengono fatti inspiegabili e si salvano vite.

Adrian, uno dei passeggeri, credendo che siano tutti dei miracolati, fonda una setta molto contestata che chiama Chiesa dei Redivivi (Church of the Returned). Secondo Adrian, queste voci provengono da forze superiori (non specificando cosa) che agiscono guidate da intenzioni maligne. Essi impartiscono ordini ai passeggeri, facendo loro credere di compiere il bene, ma in realtà li renderebbero semplicemente operatori del male, che Adrian definisce Cavalieri dell'Apocalisse.
