All'ingresso della propria casa, lussuosa ed asettica, Fred Madison (Bill Pullman), sassofonista, scopre in più occasioni alcune videocassette che ritraggono in sequenza la casa stessa, e poi lui e la moglie Renée (Patricia Arquette)mentre dormono. Avvertita, la polizia non riesce a trovare spiegazioni logiche. Una sera, Renée conduce il marito ad una festa organizzata da un certo Andy. In seguito arriva una nuova videocassetta che ritrae Fred accanto al corpo massacrato della moglie. Arrestato per omicidio, Fred è preda di violenti mal di testa ma una mattina in carcere non c'é più lui ma Pete, un giovane meccanico...
