Ten-year-old Elliott lives with his mother, brother and sister in a wooded suburb of Los Angeles.  One day he discovers an alien creature in the garden.  Elliott and the creature are first scared to death, but then befriend.  Elliott names the creature ET and hides it in a closet in his room.  The boy also introduces ET to his brother and sister.  ET quickly becomes familiar with life on Earth.  Yet he is homesick for his planet.  Meanwhile, Earth's atmosphere is beginning to affect its health.  Elliott isn't feeling well either.  After all, their bond has become so close that they experience the same feelings.
