La Risposta È Nelle Stelle, il film diretto da George Tillman Jr. e scritto dallo stesso autore dela romanzo da cui è tratto, Nicholas Sparks, racconta una straordinaria storia d'amore che vede protagoniste due coppie (Luke e Sophia, Ira e Ruth) separate dal tempo e dall'età, che sembrano avere poco in comune, fino a quando una serie di eventi inaspettati porterà le loro vite ad intrecciarsi.

Sophia (Britt Robertson), sta per vedere realizzato il sogno della sua vita. Le mancano solo poche settimane alla laurea ed è riuscita a ottenere uno stage in una prestigiosa galleria d'arte newyorkese. La ragazza ha la strada del successo spianata. Questo fino a quando una sua amica non si introduce inaspettatamente in camera sua, con indosso un paio di stivali da cowboy, proponendole due biglietti per un rodeo. Malgrado non sia proprio il suo genere di spettacolo preferito, Sophia cede all'insistenza dell'amica e le due si ritrovano a farsi strada tra le "groupie da rodeo" chiamate solitamente "Buckle Bunnies" per raggiungere i loro posti nell'arena.

Nella gabbia, Luke Collins (Scott Eastwood) si prepara a cavalcare il toro per quegli otto secondi che gli potrebbero garantire il primo posto nella classifica della Professional Bull Riders, la principale associazione di rodeo su tori. Il toro però sembra avere altri progetti e carica Luke che si arrampica su una staccionata per mettersi in salvo. Il suo cappello vola via e atterra in grembo a Sophia. I loro sguardi si incrociano per un breve istante, lungo abbastanza per far capire a Luke che vuole conoscere quella ragazza bellissima. "Ti dispiace tenermelo?", le chiede. Mentre il toro torna nella gabbia, Luke se ne va, lasciando Sophia senza fiato.

Quello stesso pomeriggio Sophia incontra Luke ma lui, invece di chiederle di restituirgli il cappello che ancora indossa, le propone di uscire. Lei accetta, senza poter immaginare che la sua vita sta per conoscere una svolta e che sarà molto diversa da come l'aveva programmata.

Anche il novantunenne Ira Levinson (Alan Alda) si trova in un periodo di transizione.

Ha perso sua moglie Ruth otto anni prima e ha deciso di intraprendere un viaggio in direzione di Black Mountain, nella Carolina del Nord, per raggiungere il Black Mountain College, una colonia artistica. Qui, anni prima, aveva comprato il primo quadro per Ruth, avviando una collezione che avrebbe scandito i decenni del loro matrimonio...
