Nel 1956 a Chicago, Leonard Burling è un sarto inglese che gestisce un negozio in un quartiere controllato dal boss della mafia irlandese Roy Boyle. Il figlio di Boyle e secondo in comando, Ritchie, e il suo capo esecutore, Francis, usano il negozio di Burling come una casa di scorta per denaro sporco; Burling tollera questa disposizione poiché i Boyles e i loro uomini sono i suoi migliori clienti.
