Mizusaki says in the episode that, "To me, living means simply making one of these [works of animation] after another. And there's just nothing I can do about that." Relating this quote to my own thoughts on fansubbing would be the most pretentious thing ever, so I'll let you imagine it, but suffice it to say that I get as much meaning out of my creative efforts as Mizusaki seems to. Localization has such shit wages because it's inherently satisfying and interesting, so a lot of qualified people want to do it, and the only fair way to decide who gets to do it is self-selection via poor pay.
