Description
Asakusa talks weird in this show. Not only that, but her strange way of speaking is mentioned in the dialogue at some point, so it's important to get it across in the English script. But making someone "talk weird" in a translation is often a one-way ticket to cringeville. After all, the task for the translation team is basically "take this line of dialogue and make it funny/quirky," but buddy, if I could write funny/interesting/quirky dialogue for any arbitrary line, I'd go become a writer. It's sorta like puns in translation—it's one thing to come up with a pun and quite another to come up with a pun *on demand*, which is why translated puns in anime are often hit-or-miss. Luckily, we didn't have to translate every single instance of Asakusa's weird speech. We just needed to do it enough to get the point across. And we basically had complete freedom over *how* to make her talk weird, since her ways of talking are varied—like a professor; like a hick; like an American. All of this is pretty straightforward/uncontroversial. But let's take it a step further. Is it okay to insert quirky dialogue into an Asakusa line that *wasn't* quirky in the original, with the justification that we're making up for all the lines we didn't translate? I did this, though I had my misgivings about it. (The "Take the high ground!" line in 01 is an example.) It seemed like the best way to do justice to the author's depiction of Asakusa. Again, the reason why we didn't map the quirkiness 1-to-1 is that that would lead to a lot of cringe/distracting lines due to "forcing" it.
