Il Diritto Di Contare è un film del 2016 diretto da Theodore Melfi, basato sull’omonimo libro di Margot Lee Shetterly. A seguito del successo riportato dalla Russia con il primo volo spaziale umano della storia, la NASA sente la pressione di dover raggiungere lo stesso traguardo. Siamo nel 1961, in piena Guerra Fredda, e in America vigono il patriarcato e la segregazione raziale. In questo clima ostile si inserisce la storia della matematica afroamericana Katherine Johnson (Taraji P. Henson) e delle sue colleghe Dorothy Vaughan (Octavia Spencer) e Mary Jackson (Janelle Monáe). Le tre donne lavorano come calcolatrici per la NASA, affrontando i problemi derivanti dalle leggi a sfavore del colore della loro pelle e dall’insofferenza degli uomini verso la richiesta dei diritti femminili.

Grazie alle sue straordinarie doti di geometria analitica, Katherine viene trasferita nello Space Task Group, un’unità che lavora al viaggio spaziale dell’astronauta John Glenn, sotto le direttive di Al Harrison (Kevin Costner). Mentre Dorothy affronta il supervisore Viviana Mitchell (Kirsten Dunst), che dubita delle sue capacità per motivi razziali, e Mary cerca di affermarsi come ingegnere chiedendo di poter accedere ad un corso frequentato esclusivamente da bianchi, Katherine troverà conforto nell’amore dell’ufficiale Jim Johnson (Mahershala Ali), lottando con tutte le sue forze per dimostrare quanto vale…
