È una pellicola fantascientifica nella quale viene narrato un ipotetico primo contatto tra l'umanità ed entità extraterrestri.



Il titolo deriva dalla classificazione degli incontri ravvicinati elaborata dall'astrofisico e ricercatore ufologico Josef Allen Hynek nel 1972, in cui un incontro ravvicinato "del terzo tipo" indica una osservazione di "esseri animati" in associazione con un avvistamento di UFO.
