A Journal for Jordan, film diretto da Denzel Washington, racconta la storia di Charles Monroe King (Michael B. Jordan), primo sergente dell'esercito in servizio in Iraq. L'uomo scrive frequentemente al figlio rimasto a casa e che non ha mai conosciuto, perché nato dopo la sua partenza. Nelle lettere Charles lo consiglia e soprattutto lo guida su come poter condurre una vita dignitosa, anche se ha non ha mai visto suo padre.

Il sergente, però, rimane ucciso nel 2006 in un attacco a Baghdad a solo un mese dalla fine della sua missione. Dopo aver appreso della sua morte, la moglie Dana Canedy (Chanté Adams) raccoglie tutte le lettere inviate da King in una raccolta destinata al figlio, che non ha mai conosciuto suo padre
