West Side Story è un film del 1961 diretto da Robert Wise e Jerome Robbins, tratto dall’omonimo musical.

Negli anni Cinquanta, l’Upper West Side di New York è scenario dello scontro tra due bande rivali. Da una parte i portoricani Sharks, dall’altra una gang di ragazzi bianchi, i Jets, che vogliono ristabilire la loro egemonia sul quartiere.

Riff (Russ Tamblyn), capo dei Jets, propone di scatenare una rissa con il capo avversario, Bernardo (George Chakiris). Riff vuole persuadere il co-fondatore della banda, Tony (Richard Beymer), ad unirsi alla serata.

Nel frattempo, Maria (Natalie Wood), sorella di Bernardo, arriva in America per compiere il volere della sua famiglia e convolare a nozze con Chino (Jose De Vega). Quella sera, la tensione tra le due bande si trasforma in una gara di ballo che permette a Maria e Tony di incontrarsi. I due si innamorano a prima vista e Tony segue Maria per confessarle i suoi sentimenti, mentre le gang si danno appuntamento nella zona neutrale, ossia alla drogheria di Doc (Ned Glass).

Jets e Sharks si accordano sulle modalità della disputa ma, nonostante fosse stato sancito il solo utilizzo dei pugni, la rissa finisce in un massacro. La felicità dei due innamorati è spazzata via dal dolore per il lutto e dal desiderio di vendetta.

Grazie all’intervento di Anybody, Tony riesce a fuggire dalle volanti della polizia ma Chino ha intenzione di trovarlo ed ucciderlo. Mentre Maria convince la cognata Anita (Rita Moreno) ad aiutare il suo amato, i Jets corrono per la città in cerca di Tony, sperando di evitare una strage…
