Oscar Diggs (James Franco) è un prestigiatore di professione e seduttore per natura, che si diverte a illudere e sbeffeggiare i suoi spettatori.

Un giorno però accade una cosa incredibile: mentre sta saltando su una mongolfiera per sfuggire a un suo nemico, viene magicamente catapultato nel leggendario regno di Oz. Una volta arrivato, scopre con suo grande stupore che la popolazione di quel posto incantato crede che lui sia il grande mago sceso dal cielo che, secondo una profezia, li libererà dalla strega cattiva.

Il prestigiatore è su di giri, infatti c'è in palio una grandissima somma di denaro per chi fermerà la fattucchiera: fama e ricchezza sembrano proprio a portata di mano. Oscar si mette subito in viaggio alla ricerca della sua preda, non sapendo però che di streghe ne incontrerà ben tre: Theodora (Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weisz) e Glinda (Michelle Williams).

Le streghe non si fideranno subito di lui, poiché non certe che sia davvero il grande mago che tutti credono. Pian piano, durante un'incredibile avventura lungo un sentiero di mattoni gialli, tra incontri bislacchi e colpi di scena, da egoista e manipolatore, Oscar potrebbe avere l'occasione di trasformarsi, più che in un grande e potente mago, in un uomo migliore. Sarà davvero possibile?
