Motherless Brooklyn - I Segreti Di Una Città, film diretto da Edward Norton, è ambientato nella New York degli anni '50 ed è la storia di Lionel Essrog (Edward Norton), un investigatore privato affetto dalla sindrome di Tourette e con un carattere molto solitario. È stato Frank Minna (Bruce Willis), a capo dell'agenzia d'investigazione, a trovare Lionel e i suoi colleghi, tra cui Tony Vermonte (Bobby Cannavale), in un orfanotrofio, dove venivano maltrattati da un gruppo di monache violente. Colpito dalla sua intelligenza, dal suo fare gentile e soprattutto dalla sua memoria fotografica, Minna ha permesso a Lionel di entrare nella sua agenzia. Ma soprattutto l'uomo lo ha aiutato a capire che quello che le persone percepivano come stranezze date dalla sindrome, potevano essere un vero e proprio dono per la sua professione.

Quando Frank muore, Lionel indaga sulla morte del suo amico e mentore, nonostante i pochi indizi a disposizione. Lionel è fiducioso, infatti, che grazie alla sua ossessiva capacità di analisi e riflessione possa riuscire a risolvere il caso. Le sue indagini lo portano a svelare molti segreti, fino a quel momento ben custoditi, e dai quali dipende il destino dell'intera città.

Girando New York, dai night club di Harlem ai bassifondi di Brooklyn, fino ai dorati e lussuosi salotti di potenti finanzieri, l'investigatore si ritrova faccia a faccia con i più pericolosi delinquenti della città, pronto ad affrontarli pur di onorare la memoria del suo amico e salvare l'unica donna che forse potrebbe aiutarlo.
