Bat Out of Hell is a British Thriller television serial created by Francis Durbridge and originally aired on BBC Two from 26 November to 24 December 1966. The series followed two lovers, Diana Stewart (Sylvia Syms) and Mark Paxton (John Thaw), who are haunted by the voice of Diana's husband over the telephone after he is murdered by the couple. Inspector Clay (Dudley Foster) was the detective inspector who headed the police investigation.
Back when they knew how to make a mystery.
Diana and Geoffrey have wealth, but not happiness. Geoffrey's assistant Mark is having an affair with Diana, and the pair plot to kill Geoffrey. When Mark shoots him and goes to dispose of the body, he's gone, and a string of phone calls from beyond the grave begin.
I am a big fan of the writings of Frances Durbridge, and over the years his work has been adapted many times. Bat out of Hell is very typical of his work, with twists and turns galore. His work was popular all over the world. Surely it's time his books were remade.
John Thaw and Sylvia Syms are both particularly good, it's always nice to see their early work. Syms was really quite glamorous.
Overall there is enough for whodunit fans to keep them guessing through till the end, the red herrings do a good job in throwing you off the scent, maybe a little slow for some, but overall I really enjoyed it.
Video is black and white and a litle grainy, but you quickly get used to that and does not
ruin the show!
