Gran Torino è un film del 2008 diretto e interpretato da Clint Eastwood.

Walt Kowalski (Clint Eastwood) è un reduce della guerra di Corea. Dopo il congedo, l’uomo è tornato in Michigan, dove ha iniziato a lavorare come meccanico e ora è in pensione.

Walt è un uomo scontroso e suscettibile, rimasto vedovo da poco tempo. Malato di tumore ai polmoni, nasconde la cosa ai figli e ai nipoti, con cui ha un pessimo rapporto. L’unica cosa a cui Walt pare tenere è conservata gelosamente nel suo garage: è la sua Gran Torino del 1972.

L’uomo vive in un difficile quartiere alla periferia di Detroit: i suoi vicini di casa, con i quali ha sempre evitato il benché minimo rapporto, sono una famiglia asiatica di etnia Hmong, spesso vittima di soprusi da parte delle bande del posto, a causa dell’assenza di un capofamiglia adulto.

Un giorno, quando i figli dei suoi vicini vengono minacciati da alcuni malviventi, interviene mettendo in fuga i teppisti. Con questo gesto conquista la stima e il rispetto dell’intera comunità Hmong. Inizialmente il vecchio sembra non apprezzare le attenzioni che riceve come ringraziamento, ma in qualche modo la sua dura corazza si inizia a scalfire.

Le cose cambiano quando il giovane Thao cerca di rubare, fallendo, la Gran Torino di Walt come gesto di iniziazione a una gang. La famiglia del ragazzo, a quel punto, per punirlo, manda il giovane a servire il vicino di casa per una settimana…
