West Side Story, il film di Steven Spielberg, è la nuova versione del classico musical del 1957 con le musiche di Leonard Bernstein, libretto di Arthur Laurents e parole di Stephen Sondheim, che nel 1961 dette origine al film di Robert Wise e Jerome Robbins vincitore di 10 premi Oscar. La storia, immortale, è quella di Romeo e Giulietta di Shakespeare, ambientata in una moderna metropoli divisa da razzismo e pregiudizi.

Due gang, i giovani immigrati portoricani Sharks, capeggiati da Bernardo, e gli americani bianchi Jets, con a capo Riff (Mike Faist), lottano per il controllo del territorio del West Side newyorkese e si scontrano ripetutamente per le strade. Durante un ballo a cui partecipano entrambe le fazioni, Maria (Rachel Zegler), sorella di Bernardo, e Tony (Ansel Elgort), un bravo ragazzo ex membro dei Jets, si innamorano a prima vista.

La loro storia, appena iniziata verrà infranta dal clima d'odio che divora le due comunità, fino ad un tragico finale di sangue, morte e dolore, che darà ai superstiti la consapevolezza dell'assurdità delle loro divisioni.
