Dopo la vittoria nella battaglia contro la Morte Nera, l'Alleanza Ribelle stabilisce la sua base sul freddo pianeta Hoth. Darth Fener ossessionato dall'idea di ritrovare Luke Skywalker, ora divenuto uno dei comdanti della ribellione, invia sonde droidi in tutta la galassia.
Nel corso di un pattugliamento intorno alla base, Luke viene attaccato da un abitante del posto, un wampa, un essere vivente simile allo Yeti. Tornando alla base, Han Solo annuncia la sua intenzione di lasciare l'Alleanza per ripagare un debito a Jabba the Hutt, ma rimanda la partenza per cercare Luke....
