La famiglia Williams viveva a Compton, malfamato quartiere di Los Angeles ad alto tasso di criminalità.

Sin da quando erano bambine, Richard ha deciso che le figlie avrebbero auto un futuro da tenniste e, nonostante non avessero preparazione alcuna, ha iniziato ad allenarle.
