The Good Doctor è una serie tv statunitense ambientata al prestigioso San Jose St. Bonaventure Hospital nella California del Nord. La storia si concentra sul giovane specializzando di chirurgia pediatrica Shaun Murphy (Freddie Highmore, Bates Motel), ammesso alla specializzazione nonostante sia affetto da autismo e con la sindrome del savant, grazie all'intervento di Aaron Glassman (Richard Schiff, West Wing), che ne ha intuito anni addietro le doti geniali, essendone il mentore da quando il ragazzo era un adolescente con una tragica storia familiare.

Così, il giovane chirurgo abbandona la sua città d'origine, nella tranquilla campagna del Wyoming, e si trasferisce in città per iniziare la sua grande avventura. Tra lo scetticismo e i pregiudizi di tutti coloro che lo circondano, superiori e colleghi, Shaun deve dimostrare che, pur non avendo la capacità di relazionarsi con le persone e di instaurarvi un rapporto, è in grado di salvare realmente delle vite grazie alla sua incredibile capacità di analisi e di astrazione le quali lo mantengono sempre calmo e fin troppo distaccato. Il giovane chirurgo non ha la sensibilità emotiva per cogliere e comprendere le sfumature degli stati d'animo di pazienti e colleghi. Difatti, spesso non si rende conto di essere eccessivamente diretto e inopportuno, sebbene abbia dalla sua una capacità di diagnosi eccezionale che lo porta a stare sempre un passo avanti agli altri specializzandi.

Ad aiutarlo nell'inserimento e nel processo di umanizzazione che cerca di intraprendere anche tentando di eliminare le sue innumerevoli fissazioni, oltre al Dott. Glassman, c'è Claire Browne (Antonia Thomas, Misfits), la prima specializzanda con cui Shaun riesce a legare, la quale lo aiuta a comprendere anche tutte le dinamiche dell'ospedale.
