Oliver Stone's homage to 1960s rock group The Doors also doubles as a biography of the group's late singer, the "Electric Poet" Jim Morrison. The movie follows Morrison from his days as a film student in Los Angeles to his death in Paris, France at age 27 in 1971. The movie features a tour-de-force performance by Val Kilmer, who not only looks like Jim Morrison's long-lost twin brother, but also sounds so much like him that he did much of his own singing. It has been written that even the surviving Doors had trouble distinguishing Kilmer's vocals from Morrison's originals.

Sconvolto per aver assistito da bambino - casualmente - alla morte di un vecchio pellerossa, a causa di un incidente stradale, Jim Morrison ne rimane inspiegabilmente colpito. Studente di cinematografia in California, si cimenta in composizioni poetiche scapigliate, e legge con molta passione Kerouac, Nietzsche, in particolare Blake, che lo suggestiona con l'immagine delle "Porte", delle barriere, cioè, della percezione, che sfida a superare per raggiungere l'infinito. Interprete "puro" degli anni '60 e dello spirito di contestazione, il giovane Morrison (Val Kilmer) fonda nel 1965 "The Doors" (Le Porte), un gruppo musicale di quattro amici, con il quale consegue ben presto i primi successi, davanti a platee in prevalenza giovanili, travolte dalle sue musiche scatenate e dal suo esibizionismo trasgressivo e sfrenato.....
