Nel 1947, nella base aeronautica "Edwards", in California, vengono testati segretamente aerei in grado di volare a velocità supersonica. Dopo che molti piloti collaudatori sono morti nel tentativo di superare il cosiddetto "muro del suono", un ex asso dell'aviazione militare e famoso pilota collaudatore americano, Charles "Chuck" Yeager, si offre di pilotare un Bell X-8, il primo Aereo X ad essere testato dalla United States Air Force







Tom Wolfe's book on the history of the U.S. Space program reads like a novel, and the film has that same fictional quality. It covers the breaking of the sound barrier by Chuck Yeager to the Mercury 7 astronauts, showing that no one had a clue how to run a space program or how to select people to be in it.
