The Abyss è un film del 1989 scritto e diretto da James Cameron, e interpretato da Ed Harris, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio e Michael Biehn.



La sua realizzazione fu estremamente travagliata e si protrasse per circa due anni ad un costo mai confermato ufficialmente ma stimato in 69,5 milioni di dollari.



La versione uscita nelle sale dura 138 minuti, la versione Special Edition uscita in DVD raggiunge i 171 minuti.



Nel 1990 uscì il romanzo omonimo di Orson Scott Card Abyss, trasposizione letteraria del film.



Il film è dedicato al capitano Pierce Oliver Kidd Brewer, Jr., membro del cast deceduto poco tempo dopo l'uscita del film.

Un sottomarino statunitense armato di missili balistici intercontinentali (SLBM) capta sul sonar un segnale sottomarino anomalo: è escluso che si tratti di un altro sottomarino perché non ne sono captati i segnali tipici, e viaggia troppo velocemente: 60 nodi. In seguito l'oggetto sconosciuto raggiunge i 130 nodi e passa vicino al sottomarino, che finisce nella sua scia ed affonda nelle vicinanze delle Isole Cayman nel Mar dei Caraibi e..................







The end credits were famously shortened to run under 5 minutes in 1989 in order to hit a target runtime and maximize daily showings; doing so also made the crawl almost illegibly tiny and fast. The credits on the extended edition were almost 10 minutes, with a bigger and slower crawl, and extended/alternate music. Several home video releases of the theatrical edition on laserdisc and DVD actually use the newer credits, so they are not entirely faithful!
