Yakov, un giovane ebreo che ha lasciato la comunità ortodossa, accetta di fare da shomer e di vegliare sul corpo di un sopravvissuto all'Olocausto deceduto per vecchiaia. Avendo perso la fede, non ha tanta voglia di tornare tra coloro da cui è fuggito ma non se la sente di rifiutare la paga che gli offre il rabbino.
