Issued in early 2008 along with the more extensive And All he Pieces Matter compilation, Beyond Hamsterdam serves as a musical companion piece to HBO's acclaimed series THE WIRE. Appropriately, the collection features R&B, hip-hop, and jazz acts from inner city Baltimore, where the gritty ensemble drama is set. Highlights of Beyond Hamsterdam include a funky version of Tom Waits's "Down in the Hole" by the teen vocal ensemble DoMaJe, the streetwise "What You Know About Baltimore" by rapper Ogun, and the horn-laden "Assume the Position" by pianist Lafayette Gilchrist. While the collection is ideal for fans of THE WIRE, it also works wonderfully as a primer on Baltimore's thriving music scene.
