Duel è un film per la TV del 1971 diretto da Steven Spielberg.

È il secondo lungometraggio (il primo per la TV) firmato dal venticinquenne Steven Spielberg, tratto dall'omonimo racconto di Richard Matheson, che ne ha curato anche la sceneggiatura.

Divenuto in breve tempo un vero e proprio cult, è il film che ha lanciato la carriera di Spielberg verso grandi successi di critica e di pubblico, a partire da Lo squalo (1975).

Girato in soli tredici giorni, nacque come film per la televisione. Poco tempo dopo, per il grande successo riscosso e per consentirne l'uscita nei cinema statunitensi, il regista ne portòla durata da 74 a 90 minuti.

Gran parte delle sequenze offrono la scena al solo protagonista (il guidatore dell'autocisterna non si vede mai), ma vengono arricchite dall'efficacia delle inquadrature e dalla tensionecostante.

La macchina del protagonista è una Plymouth Valiant del 1970. L'autocisterna è invece un modello Peterbilt 281 del 1955.
