Nel 1909 nel collegio di Cambridge il giovane Clive Durham dichiara apertamente il suo amore all'amico Maurice Hall che dapprima lo respinge disgustato, ma poi ricambia tale sentimento con un amore solo platonico, perché Clive non ammette rapporti fisici.
