band Metallica, with The San Francisco Symphony conducted by Michael Kamen. It was recorded 

on April 21–22, 1999 at The Berkeley Community Theatre. This is the final Metallica album 

to feature Jason Newsted as Metallica's bassist.

S&M to dziewiąty album zespołu Metallica, nagrany w 1999 roku. Album jest nagraniem 

koncertowego wykonania zespołu we współpracy z Orkiestrą Symfoniczną San Francisco.

Nazwa „S&M” oznacza „Symphony and Metallica”, ale niektórzy fani grupy uważają, że nazwa 

albumu jest związana z piosenką o tym samym tytule (S&M - Sado & Mazo) grupy Thin Lizzy, 

której twórczość wywarła ogromny wpływ na grupę. Zespół zagrał utwory ze wszystkich albumów 

od Ride the Lightning do ReLoad, a także dwa nowe utwory - „Human” i „No Leaf Clover” oraz 

utwór „The Ecstasy of Gold” - covery Ennio Morricone.Kompozytor Michael Kamen był dyrygentem, 

a także napisał partie na instrumenty symfoniczne.Podczas koncertu James Hetfield nazwał 

piosenkę „Of Wolf and Man” „Of Wolfgang and Man”, co nawiązuje do Wolfganga Mozarta.
