Set in a women’s prison, Great Performances: Julius Caesar offers a powerful

dramatization of the catastrophic consequences of a political leader’s extension of

power beyond constitutional confines through an all-female lens. In this acclaimed

Donmar Warehouse production directed Phyllida Lloyd (“The Iron Lady,” “Mamma Mia!”),

Shakespeare’s famous discourse on power, loyalty and tragic idealism is heightened

against the backdrop of female incarceration.

My notes



  There has been and continue to be changes in the file share world.  New additions

to my file share have been on hold.  As with all the pieces in

this file share I encourage teachers and students and videographers especially to

seek out the full DVD release from which this was coded  and add it to libraries everywhere.



The story of Julius Caesar is well-known but a few notes are necessary.  The Royal

Shakespeare Company did Julius Caesar (also in this file share group's pages as you

scroll down) was done on site.  They filmed it in South Africa with Patterson Joseph

as Brutus.  A production in modern dress had Caesar in suit and tie with the tie hanging a bit too long.  It raised some eyebrows when presented on stage.



Using the prison setting has been done before.  "Shakespeare Behind Bars" was one

of the best documentaries on the topic.  The core of that documentary was a

production of The Tempest.   In That Tempest it was an all inmate cast. (That posted to this index im my group index.)



 Here in Great Performances Julius Caesar, the extras in the file group show how the cast developed their style.  The patient viewer will be rewarded with some memorable stage experience and Great Performances.  The DVD release has full notes, booklet and

the production extras. Most of that is here from the DVD release disc.



  Various notes will show this Julius Caesar as part of an all woman Shakespeare trilogy.  That can be found under inormation on Harriet Walter featured in all three.  Unfortuanately I have not seen  the other parts of that trilogy available as disc or another source.
