TRAMA
In un mondo abitato da esseri umani, elfi, nani e altre specie magiche, l'equilibrio è sempre instabile. Le razze civilizzate devono infatti convivere con i mostri che li minacciano e a causa dei quali sono stati creati dei guerrieri mutanti in grado di ucciderli: i witcher. Geralt è uno di essi: un essere umano strappato alla sua famiglia in tenera età e sottoposto ad un durissimo addestramento, durante il quale gli furono somministrate erbe e pozioni che mutarono profondamente il suo organismo affinando i sensi, attenuando le emozioni ritenute superflue e fortificando il corpo per rendenderlo più forte, veloce, agile e resistente. Come ogni witcher, Geralt si guadagna da vivere uccidendo a contratto quelle creature che sgomentano anche i più audaci: i mostri... Le stesse persone che lo assoldano hanno paura di lui, lo considerano un male necessario, un cacciatore da pagare per i suoi servigi e di cui sbarazzarsi il più in fretta possibile. Anche Geralt, però, ha imparato a non fidarsi delle persone; molte di loro infatti nascondono decisioni spietate sotto la menzogna del bene comune o diffondono ignobili superstizioni per giustificare i loro misfatti, rivelandosi spesso creature peggiori dei mostri ai quali lui dà la caccia. Il destino stesso condurrà il witcher verso una potente maga ed una giovane principessa con un pericoloso segreto, in un continente sempre più destabilizzato da intrighi politici e calamità.
